Frequently Asked Question

WeTransfer - Sending Large Files
Last Updated 2 years ago

E-mail is not designed for large files, and anything too large will almost certainly be rejected. Using a flash drive or external hard drive containing the data is a security risk and not recommended as they may be lost or stolen.

While there are other companies offering a similar service, WeTransfer doesn't require payment or registration and there is no limit to the total number of files you can send. Please note that although the connection is secure, if sending confidential files contact ICT Service Desk for advice.

You can send any number of files to any number of recipients, although you will only be able to upload 2GB at a time.

  • Open a web browser and go to https://www.wetransfer.com/
  • Simply add your files to the list and enter the recipient(s)' e-mail address and your own address in the relevant fields. The message is optional, but recommended as a description of what the recipient will be downloading.
  • Once you click the Transfer button, your file(s) will be uploaded and a download link sent to the recipient. You'll also receive a notification once the files have been downloaded.

Please bear in mind that the download will only be available for two weeks, so if you don't receive a download notification within this time, you may have to contact the recipient again.
